Hernia Treatment in Chennai

Hernia is developed when an organ gets pushed out through the openings of the muscle or tissue. This may be due to the lack of strength or presence of hole in the muscular wall that hold the organs in place. Hernias are mostly found in the groin, upper part of the stomach, belly button and in areas of surgical scar.

Types of hernia
  • Inguinal hernia: This hernia is mostly seen in men. Here the intestine or the bladder projects out through the abdominal wall. The main symptom of inguinal hernia is that it produces some abdominal complaints like pain, vomiting etc.
  • Incisional hernia: This is mostly seen in elderly people and people with obesity. Here the intestine protrudes out through the walls of abdomen.
  • Femoral hernia: It is common in women. Here the intestine enters the canal carrying the femoral artery into the upper thigh.
  • Umbilical hernia: This hernia is commonly seen in newborns where part of the small intestine passes through the abdominal wall near the navel. Swelling, pain and vomiting are the symptoms of umbilical hernia.
  • Hiatal hernia: It occurs when the stomach protrudes out through the hiatus. Acid reflux, burning sensation in the chest are the symptoms of hiatal hernia.

Causes
Hernia is commonly seen in men than women. The main cause of hernia is not known. Sometimes it is developed by birth or by the weakness of the abdominal wall. Pressure on the abdominal wall is increased due to the following reasons.
  • Persistent cough
  • Obesity
  • Persistent cough
  • Straining to urinate and excrete
  • Lifting heavy items
  • Smoking
Diagnosis
Hernias can mostly be diagnosed by a physical examination. To see the internal location and size of hernia, we can use X-ray, endoscopy and imaging tests like CT scan or ultrasound scan.
Treatments for hernia
The treatment procedure of hernia is decided on the basis of the severity of the symptom. Most of the hernias can be controlled by making sufficient changes in the lifestyle. Medications can be used to reduce the pain and discomfort caused by hernia. If the hernia is growing larger, it can repaired by undergoing surgery. Laparoscopic surgery is commonly preferred as it is less damaging and needs only a small incision.
